Through the Lens of Local Photographers

Everyone sees the world differently. Five local photographers will explore their interests in the areas of art, nature, portraiture, agriculture and travel. Members of the Owen Sound Camera Club will present the final lecture. This series will introduce you to the passion of photography and will provide some valuable tips on taking excellent photographs.

More than simply recording photographic images, photography can be a gateway to greater understanding of the self and one's surroundings. This lecture explores ways in which photography can visualize information beyond the moment.

About the lecturer 

Steve Irvine

Steve Irvine’s photographs have appeared in publications such as National Geographic, Canadian Geographic and in numerous other magazines and texts used in Canada and around the world. His photographs are included in the book Photo Viz, an international survey of contemporary photography. He continues to challenge his own limits and those of the medium.

Through portraits, photo essays and anecdotes, Willy Waterton will introduce the audience to the people of Bruce Grey whom he has met and photographed over his 40 year career as a photojournalist. Stories about the fascinating people and their lives, along with historical references, will bring these people to life through both black and white and colour photography.

About the lecturer 

Willy Waterton

Willy Waterton, a self-taught photographer, spent 35 years as a photojournalist at The Owen Sound Sun Times overseeing the transition from black and white to colour and finally to digital. His photographs have won many awards, appearing in newspapers and magazines, including the Globe and Mail, New York Times and National Geographic.

This lecture provides professional ‘how-to’ tips for a number of photographic techniques. Beginning with creative posing of single subjects, couples and large groups, Jennifer will also discuss when and how to use flash outdoors and understanding ambient light.  Tips will be given on how to use different light direction for dynamic, dramatic portraits.

Jennifer O'Reilly

Jennifer O’Reilly discovered the joy of photography by fluke. After a few years working in the airline industry, the love of travel and a passion for the beauty surrounding her, blossomed into a career.   Jen runs workshops as the director of the Arts Warehouse in Port Elgin.  She also instructs for Georgian College and Southampton Art School.

About the lecturer 

Kerry Jarvis

Kerry Jarvis is a naturalist, gardener, author, traveller and a skilled photographer living in Southampton. He has led many workshops and presentations on Monarchs and butterfly gardening and his photographic images have won numerous awards and have appeared in a variety of media.   In the fall of 2014 he started “Butterfly Gardens of Saugeen Shores”, a community-led initiative to help the plight of Monarch butterflies. Kerry enjoys exploring and discovering the world through the lens of a camera.

Telfer will take us on a visual journey of the province’s various agricultural products ranging from livestock to forage crops to fruit and vegetables.  Production methods will be illustrated pictorially - and interesting ‘did you know’ items will be highlighted. Telfer will also give practical tips for travel photography, including specific ‘how to’ photographic examples.

Telfer Wegg

Telfer Wegg is a professional photographer specializing in outdoor and travel photos for publication or décor. Telfer’s work includes many local images together with scenes from across North America and 52 countries around the world. Most of his photographs interpret the natural world, but others reflect man’s role in the forming of our landscape.

The Owen Sound Camera Club is a community of photographers with a common interest in photography.  Each photographer aims to capture and present their own unique perspective on the world using images and one of the best ways of improving that process is through sharing and learning as a group. In this concluding lecture we look at the club as a community and then in detail at a selection of club members and the stories behind some of their images.

The Owen Sound Camera Club recently celebrated its 60th anniversary and currently has over sixty members. The membership has a wide range of skills, interests, and ages, brought together at monthly meetings which provide a mixture of assignments, lectures, and workshops. Members learn to create memorable images while navigating the complexities of modern technology.
