Current educational practices in Canada originated in the church-controlled practices and colonial governments of the early white settlers. Wise practices in education acknowledge a more diverse way of knowing and being. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission asks us to respond to the legacy of Residential Schools in Canada by introducing an inclusive Indigenous perspective in mainstream education.
Darrel Manitowabi is an Associate Professor at the School of Northern and Community Studies, Laurentian University. He holds a cross-appointment in the School of Indigenous Relations and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Sudbury. He has a PhD in sociocultural anthropology from the University of Toronto and his research interests include critical medical anthropology, applied anthropology, Indigenous peoples, and Indigenous-state relations.
